Mark Twain's first appearance in a national periodical was "Forty-Three Days In An Open Boat", first appearing in Harper's New Monthly Magazine Number CXCIX - December 1866 - Volume XXXIV. He appeared as Mark Swain, having not yet been identified or gained fame (his "Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County" had appeared in print in a newspaper in 1865, but was not yet syndicated nationally). This bound set of Harper's includes that special issue and many five others. Black cloth with quarter calf (spine and corners). Gilt spinal titles are vibrant. Minor chipping and edge wear to leather at corners and head/tale of spine, but 99% intact. Several pages have closed tears or corner folds. Solidly bound, no splits and no loose signatures, clean and unmarked
